Salt rash, sharks and sleep deprivation are certainly not part of day-to-day life at JM Glendinning. But for two of our connections, James Tordoff and Chris Nicholl, they will become an everyday reality as they take on the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge next week.
JM Glendinning is sponsoring the pair as they tackle what is billed as the world’s toughest rowing race. The challenge will see the intrepid pair – Team Hell Oar High Water (HOHW) – set off from La Gomera in the Canary Islands on the 12th December on a relentless 3,000+ mile journey during which they will each row for two hours while the other one rests: day and night, non-stop, until they reach Antigua.

Their aim is to complete the challenge in less than 90 days to raise funds that will help Centrepoint continue to support homeless young people in Bradford, support automotive charity, Ben and Bradford Hospitals Charity (BHC) Neonatal Unit.
JM Glendinning Financial Services MD, Nigel Stallworthy, says: “Two Bradford lads, one rowing boat and a 90-day time limit to row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic? That certainly sounds like a challenge to us, and we were only too happy to lend our support.
“James and Chris are an inspiration to us all. The fact that they’ve taken on a challenge of this magnitude with no previous experience, embraced it wholeheartedly and spent two years preparing for it is incredibly impressive. We’re very proud to support Team HOHW and I have no doubt that their hard work and determination will see them succeed.”
Travelling from the Canary Islands to the Caribbean, James and Chris will row west covering over 3,000 nautical miles from La Gomera to English Harbour in Antigua. Once leaving the safety of the harbour at La Gomera they’ll be on their own in the boat, at the mercy of the elements.
Nigel adds, “I’ve been to English Harbour in Antigua, where the challenge finishes, and it’s beautiful. But mid-way across the Atlantic it’s a very different story. We will be following Team HOHW’s progress with interest, and everyone here at JM Glendinning wishes them every success.”
Team HOHW are fundraising for Centrepoint, Bradford Hospitals Charity (BHC) Neonatal Unit and Ben. The sponsorship from JM Glendinning follows the group’s 45th anniversary fundraising in 2018, which saw the JMG team raise £45,000 for five local charities.
