What is covered by Insurance for Online Businesses?

As with any business, you face a wide range of risks and need to find suitable insurance to help manage them. The exact nature of the cover you take out will depend upon the nature of your business and the level of risk you’re willing to bear yourself. Here though are some of the covers typically arranged for an online or ecommerce business:

  • Property Insurance – This would cover damage to your business premises, or if you work from home, we may arrange a ‘Homeworkers’ policy, designed for those who both live and work from their home and store business equipment and stock there.
  • Business Interruption Insurance – If you should suffer a claim on your property insurance, this covers shortfalls in your income as a result of the claim. For example you could be left without stock or unable to produce products due to loss of key business equipment.
  • Public Liability & Product Liability Insurance – These are typically included together under the same policy. Public Liability covers your liability for any financial loss or injury suffered by a third party arising out of their dealings with you (for example if a visitor was injured at your premises). If the loss or injury came as a result of using a product you have provided, this would be covered by the Products Liability section.
  • Employers’ Liability Insurance – If you employ anyone within your business, other than immediate family, then this cover is a legal requirement. This is not required if you outsource work to freelancers (such as a graphic designer or web developer) but is required if you employ people directly as an employee and pay them a salary. It covers your liability for any financial loss or injuries they suffer in the course of their employment.
  • Stock Insurance – If you operate an online ecommerce store, you may hold stock. Cover may be required for loss, damage or theft while the products are stored at your premises or home.
  • Cyber Liability Insurance – If you hold data on your customers – especially credit card details or other sensitive data – you could be vulnerable to cyber crime, which is a growing problem for businesses of all sizes. We can also arrange cover for this, which would cover the cost of any forensic IT work, or recovering your website if it should become hacked.

Why is the right insurance so hard to find?

You may have already tried to arrange insurance before. Many mainstream insurers will shy away from online traders who work from home and keep stock on their premises. We recognise that many ecommerce businesses start off this way as they don’t have the funds to pay for business premises straight away. We work closely with insurers to get around this problem and find you the cover you need. That may involve working with multiple insurers and policies to fully cover all of your risks.

Whilst some insurers don’t fully understand the needs of online businesses, we work with progressive, flexible insurers who know and understand the market and already have customers like you. We then work closely with them to ensure that they fully understand your requirements and can offer cover that meets your needs.

What do you need to consider when it comes to insuring your Online Business?

Whether you sell from your own website, or through online platforms such as EBay, Amazon or Etsy, we can find cover that suits your needs. Even if you also have a physical store, we can also arrange Shop Insurance for those premises. As part of the process of arranging a quote, we’ll also need details of your turnover, profits, stock levels and wageroll (if you employ staff), as well as details of your premises and security. We’ll take you through a fact-find process to discover any other information we need, before providing you with a quote.
